Working in conjunction with its parent company, Firstline Security, Actuality Entertainment developed and produced the reality show The Prodigy, Opportunity Knocks, in 2007. The idea was conceived by the executive team at Firstline Security, who sought a new way of recruiting top talent for its summer sales program without paying exorbitant signing bonuses. Firstline Security created Actuality Entertainment to bring the idea to life, juxtaposing traditional recruiting with contemporary reality television. During the course of the show, Actuality Entertainment and Firstline pared the approximately 2,000 contestants down to 5 finalists who attended the final awards ceremony in Hawaii.
Actuality Entertainment filmed every stage of the series, beginning with the initial group recruiting presentations and individual job interviews. The selected contestants went through all-inclusive training with Firstline products before being assigned to various sales territories throughout the country. In addition to capturing the contestants’ sales presentations to customers, Actuality Entertainment collected footage of several business skill competitions that were held throughout production. These competitions were designed to test the contestants’ skills in several areas, such as presenting and creating a business plan. Finalists for The Prodigy were selected based on a combination of overall sales performance and results from the skills contests. Guest judges held responsibility for choosing winners of the skills competitions, with the Firstline Board of Directors selecting the recipient of the grand prize.
